Southern Music Academy teaches voice lessons for teens at your home or online for $159 a month. Every teacher is a college-educated musician with at least 5 years of teaching experience. We have taught over 3000 lessons, and 95% of our families stay enrolled from one month to the next.

This page explains how the lessons work, what they cost, where we teach, and how to know if your teen is ready.

What are voice lessons for teens?

Voice lessons are one-on-one sessions where a teacher trains a student to sing with better pitch, breath control, and tone. For a teen, the lessons also include picking songs that fit their voice right now, because a 14-year-old voice is not the same as an adult voice.

A teen who has never sung alone can start. So can a teen already in the school choir who wants a solo, or one who plans to audition for a musical.

How much do voice lessons cost in Atlanta?

Our voice lessons cost $159 a month for weekly 30-minute lessons. We recommend 45-minute weekly lessons, which cost $234 a month. 60-minute lessons cost $304 a month. That is a flat monthly rate, so there is nothing to calculate each week and no per-lesson fee at the door.

  • How often are lessons: Weekly

  • Books included?: No. Books and materials not included

  • Cancellation terms: Month to month. No minimum-term contracts

Prices for private voice teachers in the Atlanta area vary a lot, so compare the length of the lesson and what is included, not only the monthly number.

How do the lessons work?

Each lesson follows the same basic shape, and the teacher adjusts it to the student.

  • The lesson starts with a warm-up for breath and range.

  • The student and teacher work on technique, such as staying on pitch and moving between chest voice and head voice.

  • The rest of the lesson goes to a song the student picked or the teacher assigned.

  • The teacher gives one or two things to practice before the next week.

  • Twice a year, students can perform at one of our recitals.

You choose the format when you sign up.

  • In-home: The teacher comes to your house.

  • Online: The lesson runs on video call. Your teen needs a phone, tablet, or computer with a camera, plus a quiet room. They also need a way to play a backing track while on the call, which usually means a second device.

Who teaches the lessons?

Our voice teachers are college-educated musicians. Each has taught for at least 5 years. That matters with teens, because a teacher who has taught a few hundred lessons has already seen a cracking voice, a nervous first audition, and a student who stops practicing in February. They know what to do in each case.

What age should a teen start voice lessons?

A teen can start at any age from middle school through high school. Starting earlier gives more time to build habits, but a 17-year-old preparing for a college audition can make real progress in a few months.

If your teen is already in a voice change, that is fine. The teacher picks songs in a range that is comfortable that month and changes them as the voice settles. Boys' voices usually drop in pitch during puberty. Girls' voices change too, in a smaller way.

How do I know if my teen is ready?

Your teen is ready if they sing around the house without being asked, if they want to try out for a choir or school musical, or if they say they want to get better. They do not need to be good yet. That is what the lessons are for.

Is online as good as in-home?

For most teens, yes. A video lesson covers breath, pitch, and song work just as well as sitting in the same room. The difference is mostly convenience. Online saves the family a trip, and in-home gives the teacher a better read on posture and breathing.

Families who want a teacher in the room choose in-home. Families with packed schedules often choose online. You can switch later if your schedule changes.

What does a teen get from lessons besides better singing?

Better singing is the visible result. The other result is steadier confidence, and one student showed me that clearly.

She was a teen with a full schedule and very little time to practice. Her family was going through a hard stretch at home. Her lesson was the one thing each week that stayed the same. I came to her house every week, we worked on her singing, and I asked how she was doing. She did not practice as much as she needed to. She still improved week to week, and seeing that gave her confidence she did not have in other parts of her life.

Teen years bring a lot of change. A steady adult who shows up each week, checks in on how things are going, and teaches more than music can give a teen something solid to stand on. That is part of what our teachers do, and it is a large part of why families stay.

Do teens perform?

Yes. We hold two recitals per year. A recital gives your teen a real audience and a date to prepare for, which is the best motivator we have found for practice. Teens who are nervous start with a short song, and the teacher builds from there.

Teens also use lessons to prepare for school choir tryouts, musical auditions, and talent shows.

What do parents ask most?

Does my teen need to own a keyboard or any equipment? No, we don't require you to have a keyboard in the home, however, it is highly recommended.

How long until we see progress? Most families notice a change in the first month, usually in pitch or confidence. Bigger changes take several months of steady practice.

Can my teen switch between in-home and online? Yes. Of course

What if my teen does not have time to practice? Tell the teacher. Lessons still help, and the teacher can set a short practice routine of 10 to 15 minutes.
